Opening Reception | Anemoia: Expressions of Subcultural Longing

“Anemoia: Expressions of Subcultural Longing” is a group exhibition curated by Kadence Gonzalez for her Barrett, The Honors College thesis. The featured artists were found by an open call for art. Anemoia (/an-uh-moya/) is defined as nostalgia for a time or place one has never known. It usually refers to sentimental feelings experienced when looking at old photographs or the wanderlust of imagining oneself in a historical period piece. As the inspiration for this exhibition anemoia is used to express not only nostalgia for past subcultures, but a deeper craving for the community, belonging, and freedom of expression that thriving subcultures cultivated. A strong sense of community can be difficult to find, especially in an age dealing with a lack of third spaces and a loneliness epidemic. Many people today grapple with feelings of isolation because of how hard it can be to make meaningful connections with others, missing a sense of belonging and understanding that subcultures and communities can provide Though we face these social challenges, community can be found everywhere. This exhibition aims to affirm that belonging to a community and having space to explore identity freely and without fear of judgement is key to making positive change in our lives and the lives of others.
